Montgomery Clunk — Superbus (Error Broadcast)
November 23, 2010 | Tweet | HomeComing off the recent Fly Russia compilation, Error Broadcast is continuing to promote forward looking beat experimentations from around the world. Their latest release comes from Bucharest, a six-track EP by Montgomery Clunk called Superbus. It’s a creeping, sly melding of hip-hop and electronics, conjuring a dirty but vibrant atmosphere. Montgomery Clunk’s work fits in nicely with the hazy work of artists like Shlohmo, Teebs, and Flying Lotus. A notable difference is that some of the tracks here have a dark quality, a coating of detritus, such as on “Asspirations” and “Murder!” Even when the melodies get a little brighter on the beginning of “Entourage,” they are still tempered by a slinky low-end loop that buries the mix back into spooky depths. There is a subtle narrative going on here, of a person with an almost supernatural relationship to the natural sounds being heard all around. “Heat” and “Sink The Clunkmobile” continue this trend with closer “Work Your Pitch” being the brightest, most hopeful track of the EP. The eerie moments work to great effect throughout, though, imbuing the beats with a heady mood that harkens back to some of the contemplative post-hip-hop work of Mo’Wax artists, but without the overblown cinematics or tired soul samples. The EP is available to buy now as a lossless download at the Error Broadcast Store, as well as at Boomkat and iTunes. A free download version will be made available on November 29th. However, the free version doesn’t include the thoroughly weird bonus track “Lemonade,” a bubbling, hectic song that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Hudson Mohawke release. I can see why it’s a bonus track, as it’s vibrant childlike quality doesn’t fit in with the more serious and ominous tones of the previous six tracks. Either way you choose to get, it’s a great EP and Montgomery Clunk is definitely a musician to watch out for in the future.
